Don’t forget all the lovely, noisy, loose change you’ve been collecting for the Scholarship Fund, and don’t forget the plastic bags and medicine bottles!
Remember that we’ll be selling take-home meals for $5.

If you don’t RSVP via our email survey or receive a call from one  of our volunteer callers, please call

AND, if you have time, please plan to stay for just a few minutes after the meeting to help clean our meeting space.

 President’s Message

Winter seems to be passing us by – but who’s complaining? These warm spring temperatures are calling nature to announce itself, as if to say, “Ready or not, here I come!”
Spring is a time of fresh beginnings, which brings us to the opportunity to vote for new NEA-R delegates.  Voting will take place at our March 16 meeting, so please make it a priority to be there.
Our NCRSP State Convention is March 30-31 in Durham. If you’d like to attend, one or both days are optional and should prove to be informational. Contact me by March 9  mdooley999@gmail.com for reservations. Carpooling is available!
Finally, our Region 1B Convention is April 7, in Morganton. In the past, I have found this to be enjoyable, informational, and an opportunity to meet our neighbors. Good prizes too!
Both Watauga and Avery members are included in all information and opportunities!
Our program for March features ACES (Appalachian Community of Education Scholars).  These students are the answer to the now-unfunded Teaching Fellows program. Please join us as several of the education students will share information about this new program.
It takes many kind souls to make this organization run smoothly. Becky Steele is doing a magnificent job as editor of our Red Pencil newsletter. Linda Seamster is doing a terrific job managing our finances with a fine tooth comb! We appreciate Kathy Moorman as she brings interesting programs each meeting. Thank you to Beth Carrin, our Care Coordinator, who has been sending out notes to our members who are experiencing illness or the passing of a loved one. Contact her if you know of someone who needs a note. Thanks to Janice Burns for baking her wonderful coconut pound cake for the Scholarship raffle at the last meeting, Also, thanks to Karen Crotts, who has volunteered to decorate our tables. There are, of course, many others who contribute regularly to our success, but I’ll save some of them to thank next time!

Watauga Unit Scholarship News

Special Raffle Included
Each year, as you know, we give $1000 to a graduating senior who plans to become a teacher. Our March meeting is the last chance we
will have this year to contribute to the scholarship fund, and we’re hoping you’ll bring all your loose change and maybe a check or two.  Also, we hope you’ll consider making a donation to the fund in honor or in memory of a colleague. If you will not be attending the March meeting, you may mail this donation to Linda Seamster, Treasurer, PO Box 2963, Boone, NC  28607.
For the past few years, our raffle to benefit the scholarship fund has been such a
success that we’re doing it again.  To support our $1,000 scholarship we are raffling off a gift certificate to Stick Boy Bread Company. Tickets are $5 each.

Inclement Weather Policy

Despite the recent spring-like weather, we all know that Watauga County weather can “turn on a dime,” so we’d like to remind everyone that on the day of our NCRSP meeting, if schools are closed, our meeting will be cancelled. If schools are on a delay, however, the meeting will go on as planned.

Member Directory

If you’re looking forward to having either a digital or print copy of a directory of our members, please be patient just a little bit longer as we attempt to include as many people as possible.     We appreciate those members who took the time to fill out the online survey indicating whether or not they want to be included in the directory, but, unfortunately, some people who said they want to be in the directory neglected to include their names.
For that reason, we’ll do yet another quick questionnaire at the March 16 meeting. In the meantime, if you want to make sure you’re included in the directory, email Becky Steele at steelebecky58@gmail.com to clarify if you’re okay with us including your phone number, physical address, and email.

Heartline - News from our NCRSP Family

-   Roger Harwood fell recently and broke his right arm. Please keep  him and Linda in your thoughts.
-   We send our condolences to Sharon Brooks, whose older brother died in late February.

-   Stan Smith has been moved from Baptist to the rehab center at Forsyth Hospital. He has not started rehab because of medication to regulate his heart rate and blood pressure.
Prayers are appreciated.

Please let me know if you, or one of our members, has a special event (a new grandchild, a special trip, a special need, a hospital stay, the loss of a family member), or anything else relevant for this section of the newsletter. You may send the information to Becky Steele at steelebecky58@gmail.com.

Come See Who Will Receive the 2017 Red Apple awards
The Watauga Unit of NCRSP recognizes exemplary service to the unit with the Red Apple Award, a special pin that recipients wear with pride.  Our first presentation, last August, recognized our members who have been a loyal part of our unit for decades.
At our meeting on March 16, we will be making the second
presentation, again honoring members who have served with
! distinction.  We hope that you will be present.

Back 2 School Festival is Aug. 12

The Back 2 School Festival will be held on Sat., Aug. 12. The first planning meeting was held at the beginning of this month, but keep your eyes open for additional emails about future planning meetings, and mark your
calendar now if you’d like to volunteer to help the day of the festival.

Voting Procedure for NEA-R Delegates

Watauga members AND Avery members: Please try to be at the March 16 meeting to vote for NEA-R delegates. As you come into the meeting, you will be handed a ballot listing all the names of the candidates.  Take the ballot to your table, where you will find pens and a printed list of the names of candidates with whom your Watauga
Unit Executive Board is familiar.  Mark your ballot USING THE INK PEN and someone will come around to collect ballots at your table.  PLEASE NOTE THAT THE LIST IS SIMPLY FOR YOUR INFORMATION. IT IS NOT A SUGGESTION FOR HOW YOU SHOULD VOTE.

ACES Students to Speak at March Meeting

Students from ASU’s ACES program will speak at our March 16 luncheon. With the loss of funding for the N.C. Teaching Fellows Program, ASU decided they wanted to continue “a diverse community that is rich in tradition and school spirit.” The ACES program “provides a four-year program for future teachers, focusing on mentoring, leadership, service, and
professional development.”  Their members are “active participants and leaders within the Appalachian Educators Club,” while the program “provides a sense of camaraderie for future educators that promotes a passion for teaching.”

Recipient of Grant Looking for GAL Volunteers

According to www.nccourts.org, a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) advocate “is a trained community volunteer who is appointed, along with a Guardian ad Litem attorney, by a district court judge to investigate and determine the needs of abused and neglected children petitioned into the court system by the Department of Social Services.” They help to investigate what solutions would be in the “best interests of a child.”
Lynn Presnell, a retired teacher and college professor, has been given a 9-month grant-funded job to recruit more Guardian ad Litems (GALS) for our Judicial District 24. She hopes to double the number of current GALS in each county of the district.
Anyone interested in volunteering to be trained as a GAL, or anyone who would like more information, should contact Lynn at 828-278-0231 (H) or 828-773-4646 (C).

Keep up with those volunteer hours!
Candace Hall has totaled our 2016 volunteer hours and found that as a unit, we donated 5252.5 hours! Of those hours, 1734.5 were in Education and the remaining 3518.0 were in other activities.  Forty-nine members submitted forms, an increase of nine over last year.  Our Volunteer of the Year, once again, is Mary Hazel Farthing Mast, who volunteered 407 hours at Caldwell Community College, Glenbridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, and Valle Crucis School.
Candace will be collecting your form for January, February, and March at our March 16 meeting.  Complete the form and bring it with you to the meeting, please.
Please note that activities for which you are paid (honoraria/stipends) and activities performed in caring for grandchildren, elderly parents, or other family members DO NOT COUNT toward your volunteer hours.
The state NCRSP is particularly interested in the number of hours you volunteer IN EDUCATION.
